Over the summer I was in my home country, Turkiye and got opportunity to visit several regional and national traditional wrestling tournaments that take place during summer as part of summer festival. I also got chance to see some old friends and my wrestling coaches. I shared my experience with other Turkish wrestlers and community.I joined in live wrestling broadcasting on the National TV (TRT 3) at Darende Karakucak Wrestling Festival, which is the one of the biggest Turkish traditional wrestling.

Champions Wrestling School
2009-2010 Annual Wrestling Report and Future Plan
Dear Wrestling Community,
Now we are leaving another wrestling season behind and are already getting ready for the next wrestling season. When we look back on the previous wrestling season, we see that Champions Wrestling School has had a terrific wrestling season with many successes and activities hosted. I would like to touch on several highlights;

Achievement of our Members,
During 2009-2010 wrestling season, we had over 200 wrestlers participated our clinics and camp and practices, with over 60 regulars members we had 14 States Champions, 18 State placers, 8 National Champions. And of course, we would like to thank you parents for their tremendous support and trust in our program. We believe “good partners make you a good wrestler.” Therefore, we concentrate on making sure our wrestlers have good partners who help each other become better wrestlers. Many wrestlers from different areas come to our practices just to have a great workout partner. Therefore we believe “quantity in the room is not as important as quality.”

We had 8 wrestling clinics and one winter wrestling camp, and three summer wrestling camp during the past wrestling season. We attracted many wrestlers from all over the southeast, including Roanoke VA, Charleston SC, Asheville NC, Raleigh NC. Columbia SC. We plan to hit 10 wrestling clinic and 4 summer wrestling camps in 2010-2011 wrestling season in different areas in the southeast US.

I believe a coach’s experience and teaching ability plays a significant role in the development of a wrestler. So we try to make sure our wrestlers are being taught by such a coach. Thus, we make sure our coaches are dedicated to coaching young wrestlers in the development of physical skills and positive attitudes for total success.

We are fortunate to have two new coaches who have phenomenal wrestling backgrounds. Jimmy Avola, who wrestled for Davidson College under supervision of three-time NCAA Champion TJ Jaworsky, will be one of the our coaching staff. As an assistant, he currently coaches at Charlotte Catholic High School in Charlotte, NC. With his Division I College experience, he is looking forward to sharing his talents and knowledge with future champions. He will be mostly responsible for the Charlotte location and will be available to work with light weight class wrestlers privately.

In 2009-2010 wrestling season, we lost one of our coaches, Travis Pennell, since he had to finish his internship before graduating from Queens University in Charlotte. Now we have him back on the coaching staff and he is looking forward to being on the mat with kids. He will be responsible for the Matthews location and will be available to work with middle weight class wrestlers.

Our third assistant coach will beJoVante Asfort who wrestled for King College, Division I Wrestling College, in Tennessee and has a great wrestling background. He has been on our coaching staff since November 2009. We also welcome other people who have great wrestling backgrounds and allow them to assist us during practice, clinics, and camps.

Expanding Location and Membership
Last year, we opened our second location in Matthews, NC to reach out to the local community in which we see many people who are very interested in wrestling, but due to distance to our Charlotte locations could not always participate. So we decided to provide an opportunity for them to make their dream come true. Our location in Matthews is conveniently located and provides easy access from any direction, right off the highway 485 and 74/Independence Blvd. It provides a place for wrestlers to train and also offers fitness equipment for a more intense workout.

In addition to our two locations, we are planning to add a third location in Greensboro, NC. Right now we have several options we are considering for a location. We are making sure the location is easily accessible from any direction for parents and provides a great workout opportunity for the wrestlers with fitness equipment.

Organizing Nationally - Recognized Wrestling Tournaments
As we committed at the beginning of the last year, we hosted our first tournament (Southern Freestyle and Greco-Roman Wrestling Championship) in May at Central Cabarrus High School, in Concord, NC. We had over 180 wrestlers from different states, even though spring wrestling is not as common as in the northern states.

For next season we are planning to run at least two wrestling tournaments (one in December, one in February, and possibly one in May) to provide the opportunity for wrestlers to compete. We will do our best to attract wrestlers from other states to increase the level of competition in North Carolina.

Wrestling Trip to Turkey

We were planing to have a wrestling trip to Turkey to visit a wrestling camp with Turkish Youth Wrestling Team and have several matches throughout Turkey. We received tremendous attention and were contacted by our friends in Turkey, but, because of the tough economic situation, and Fargo Freestyle Greco National occurring at same time, we canceled our trip for this year. Hopefully we will attempt to go next year right after schools close.

When Walderge brothers joined Champions Wrestling School nobody expected they are going to be so competitive but their work ethics set the tone in the room. They never skipped the practice and worked our 4-5 times a week. A few months later, they started to shine and show some improvement. And now they are dominating their weight classes in Southeast and winning every tournament they participated, finishing first place at Southern National, making SC National Team for National Championship for the first time.
So Look out for these boys for next several years!!

Great work boys, keep up the good work!

3 Days Winter Break Wrestling Camp

Hello All,
During Winter break, we hosted 3 days Winter Break Wrestling Camp with over 40 participants. We had many wrestlers from all over including Greensboro, Gastonia, Fort Mill, Rock Hill SC, Concord, Raleigh and Charlotte.

It was designed to give wrestlers a distinctive approach in terms of preparation for upcoming wrestling tournaments in early 2010. During the camp, wrestlers were trained and got opportunity to improve their skills in many areas including Russian ties series, take-downs, top-bottom positions, and situational live wrestling drills. ( Next clinic is on Feb 7'th, and Spring Break Wrestling Camp is March 5-7'th, a week before the AAU NC State Championship)

On Dec 27 2009, We, As Champions Wrestling School, participated in Dixie Middle School National Tournament in Atlanta, GA. Even though, we did not performed well as a team, it was quite well experience for our wrestlers who just have been wrestling for about average 3 years. In addition, We had several wrestlers who wrestled on the other NC elementary and middle school team and showed great effort. Within these wrestlers are Troy Gregor (first place in the dual team championship) and Brendon Lemmon (fourth place in individual championship) Outstanding performance!

As conclusion, we would like to thank for those who participated in our winter break wrestling camp, and whose who support our program and take advantage of our world class training.

*Just as quick info, we moved our preschoolers and Sundays practice to our Matthews location which offer larger space, convenient from any direction and has many fitness equipments we can work with.
